A Must Read for Modern Minds
I'm reading this very interesting book right now. the title is not the most catchy. The book was recommended by one of the writers (editors?) of the OT articles in the Interpreter's Bible 1952. the author basically retells his own evolution in thought with regards to the Bible. He goes from the 1840's to the 1910's. A time of great upheavals both in science and theology. A truly fascinating read, and one that should be read by thinking Christians today, whatever side of the fence you find yourself on. He details how he made his way through the murky and dangerous waters of the cultural revolutions that were taking place as result of German higher criticism and Darwinian evolution (and how he came to peace with both).
Two of his main concerns throughout this time had been the 2nd coming of Christ (or "second advent" as he calls it), and the inspiration and authority of the Bible. He ends up rejecting both of the, what had been during his time, traditional or accepted views. He is too liberal for my liking, yet raises some very important questions, that must be answered by all thinking Christians, and by Christians of every succeeding age.
